News from Homes England

April 4, 2024 by ifsm_dev Leave a Comment

From Monday 8 April, Homes England will launch the ‘Building Remediation Hub’. The online Hub is open to all new applications for government funding to replace unsafe cladding on medium- and high-rise buildings (those over 11 metres).

The Hub will make it more straightforward for those responsible for the safety of buildings to apply for funding and will mean that we are collecting consistent data regardless of the height of the building. The Building Safety Fund application form on Citizen Space will no longer be live once the Hub goes live with any unsubmitted information lost.

Additionally, from 8 April, new applications to the Building Safety Fund (BSF), using the Hub, should have their FRAEW carried out by a Homes England panel to obtain a Fire Risk Appraisal of External Walls (FRAEWs); and submit the appraisal in the required format.  New applicants commissioning FRAEWs from 8 April should have their FRAEW carried out by a panel member. You will receive details of the panel once you have completed the initial stage of your application. The use of a panel member is, however, not mandatory.

Who can apply for government funding?

Individuals can apply if they are:

  • a Responsible Entity (the person(s) legally responsible for the building), or
  • an authorised representative of a Responsible Entity, or
  • a registered provider of social housing, and
  • eligible to apply for government funding, having taken all reasonable steps to recover the costs of addressing the life safety fire risks associated with the cladding from those responsible (through insurance claims, warranties, legal action etc).

To qualify, buildings must:

  • be over 11 metres high, and
  • have at least one qualifying residential leaseholder (with exception of social sector landlords applying due to financial viability concerns),
  • have unsafe cladding on an external wall.

If applying via the financial viability route for social housing providers, there is no requirement for a residential leaseholder. Instead, the registered provider makes a declaration.

Ash joins the IFSM team

March 28, 2024 by ifsm_dev Leave a Comment

We are happy to announce that Ash has now joined the team here at the IFSM to offer admin support.  Ash has come from an 18 year career in Veterinary Nursing where she became experienced in student training and team management.  After relocating to Chesterfield with her daughter she decided the time was right for redirection and change in career.

She enjoys spending time in nature and wild camping.  Her other hobbies include embroidery, pyrography, DIY, gaming, and movies.

‘I am delighted to be part of the IFSM and have received a fantastic welcome from everybody!  I look forward to supporting the team in the office and meeting members at IFSM events.  I will be on the end of the phone for any general inquiries and will keep everyone updated on news and upcoming events on social media.  I look forward to meeting everyone!’

ISO 9001 Certification

March 28, 2024 by ifsm_dev Leave a Comment

We are proud to announce the Institute has been awarded the internationally recognised ISO 9001 certification for quality management from the independent certification body, British Assessment Bureau Ltd.

By obtaining this certification, we have demonstrated that we are committed to operational excellence and, equally as important, that systems are in place for continuous improvement.

To read more about this amazing achievement, please see page 12 in the Spring Edition 58 of Daedalus.

First Scholarship Research Projects

March 8, 2024 by ifsm_dev Leave a Comment

In 2022 the Institute released an initiative with an open invitation for those wishing to pursue a fire related topic of their interest to apply for a scholarship fund.  The two selected projects ran from January through to December of 2023 and the reports are now available within the Technical library of our website.  A special edition of Daedalus is coming soon where they will also feature in full.

Authentic Leadership and Safety Outcomes  –  by Dr. Fiona Beddoes-Jones, UK Chartered Psychologist, The Cognitive Fitness Consultancy

The report explores how Authentic Leaders foster a culture of Psychological Safety through support and integrity, positive role modelling and trust, leading to stronger Safety Climates and ultimately resulting in fewer incidents, accidents and near-misses.

Fire Alarm Systems with Consideration of People with Sensory Sensitivities. – by Sonny White, Student

The research considered four different SEN (special education needs) schools to provide real life examples and demonstrate how to reduce the possibility of individuals having adverse reactions to sudden loud noises such as the fire alarm, as well as considering how to reduce the risk of fire alarms being falsely or maliciously activated and causing more frequent upset to individuals and their learning.

Applications are currently open until 31st July 2024 for research funding for 2025. See our website for further information.
