Training Courses
Resources to help you improve your knowledge or offer your own course to our members.
We aim to support the creation of careers pathways for fire risk assessors through the provision of accredited, nationally recognised qualifications.
Our ‘Career Pathways for Fire Risk Assessors’ document sets out a clear pathway forward to build up the shortfall and skills gap that we are experiencing in fire risk assessors given the reliance on assessors for carrying out further regulatory functions that are being introduced.
It is hoped that the fire industry will adopt the career pathways model, but we are fully committed to its introduction into the Institute.

The Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) forms part of this pathway, it is a qualification customised by us teaching the basic underlying principles required to undertake fire risk assessments and is aimed at those starting out in their FRA career. The course has been passed over to and is now owned by Awarding Body in Building Environment (ABBE) and complements the Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications they already have.
The Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Fire Risk Assessment is accredited by awarding body ABBE and is registered with Ofqual. For further information on the course and approved training centres please view ABBE's website and our accredited training provider page for IFSM accredited course providers.
Please note that this qualification is now owned by ABBE and all enquiries should be directed to them.

An IFSM accredited course is one that has been assessed by the Institute and is considered to be of an appropriate standard that the Institute is willing to recommend.
Similarly, an IFSM approved centre is a training centre where relevant courses of an acceptable standard are delivered.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure you carefully read the disclaimer before viewing the register or selecting a Training Provider. It is your responsibility to evaluate the suitability of any Training Provider for the selected task.
Disclaimer and conditions of the Accredited Training Providers Register
Please read the following important information carefully if you wish to search for an Accredited Training Provider. Use of the Register is conditional upon you accepting this Disclaimer.
Users of the Accredited Training Providers Register should note that all procedural aspects of the Training Provider Accreditation are open and transparent and the Accreditation Process sets out the policy, process and philosophy used to accredit providers.
The User of the Register, whether a ‘responsible person’ or a company looking to contract a Training Provider, should also familiarise themselves with national guideline documents for fire safety awareness training.
Users of the Accredited Training Providers Register are asked to note the following:
- The Institute’s policy document identifies the procedure and process that our assessors follow to determine acceptability of a sufficient standard of course quality and content that the Institute will accredit.
- The User’s contract is with the Training Provider and not with the Institute. The Register provides a basis for assessing the ability to train, but cannot evaluate or assess the suitability of any advice in relation to any particular training session. No agent or employee of the Institute will have been involved in the session and have any knowledge of any client premises or operations for which a Provider prepares training sessions.
- It is the responsibility of the User to evaluate the suitability of any Training Provider for the selected task, whether assessing risk to people, buildings, business continuity or any combination of these. It is also the responsibility of Users to satisfy themselves with regard to the Training Provider’s professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover.
- Use of this site Register is conditional upon the User accepting and confirming the above.
In line with the aims and objectives of the Institute, we provide members and prospective members with an opportunity to have their courses and facilities assessed and accredited by a recognised and highly regarded professional organisation. Once approved, your course or centre will be advertised on this website as meeting the standards of the Institute in terms of quality, content and methods of tuition.
