After leaving the local authority fire service where the last fourteen years were in the role of senior fire officer, Robert moved into the field of health and safety and fire safety in the education sector, where he was employed for five years. Having then taken the chance to move mainly into the domain of fire safety, Robert has now been an operational fire risk assessor since the inception of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
He has now completed over five hundred fire risk assessments, covering the majority of ‘Purpose Groups’ under the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Fire Safety Risk Assessment guides.
Associated work has been done for local authority councils, various residential housing providers, hundreds of mainstream schools, university and college buildings, listed buildings, major retail, and industrial companies, hotels, children’s homes, hospitals, and buildings having fire-engineered solutions.
Robert’s professional services include:
1. Fire risk assessments and later reviews to achieve statutory compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
2. Health and safety audits and assessments to attain compliance.
3. Building pre-occupation safety surveys.
4. Liaison with Enforcing Authorities, i.e. local authority fire and rescue services and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
5. Post-incident/accident investigations.
6. Premises’ fire safety plan drawing consultations (Building Regulations Approved Document B (ADB) compliance).
Most recently, he has been heavily involved with the working group for the new Level 2 IFSM Award in Principles of Carrying out Fire Risk Assessments; this process included Robert reviewing and collating the base data for the training manual for the Level 2 Award.

- Overview of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
- Fire safety codes of practice and guidance.
- The Building Regulations ADB – summary consideration.
- Passive and active fire protection of buildings (including over-provision).
- Sources of ignition and fuel and electrical hazards.
- The mechanics of means of escape.
- Progressive horizontal and other evacuation strategies.
- Fire detection and alarm systems.
- Room/area occupancy capacities/performance conditions.
- Premises’ health and safety interaction with fire safety.
